How Risk Assessments Help You and Your Clients
Share
Running a cleaning business isn’t just about leaving spaces sparkling, it’s also about keeping people safe, staying compliant, and being prepared. One of the most important tools to help you do that? A risk assessment.
But don’t worry, it’s not as complicated or scary as it sounds.
What Is a Cleaning Risk Assessment?
A risk assessment is just a simple way to identify anything that could cause harm while you or your team are working, and then make a plan to reduce that risk.
For example: Will a wet floor create a slipping hazard? Could strong chemicals affect someone’s health? Is there a risk from electrical equipment?
By thinking these things through in advance, you’re protecting your staff, your clients, and your business.
Why Are Risk Assessments Important?
- It’s a legal requirement: If you have employees, you're legally required to carry out risk assessments under UK health and safety law.
- It builds trust: Clients love knowing you take their safety seriously.
- It prevents accidents: A few minutes of planning can save a lot of trouble later on.
- It protects your reputation: Showing you’re professional, compliant and prepared sets you apart from other cleaning companies.
Do I Need a Separate Risk Assessment for Every Job?
Ideally, yes, or at least for every type of job or location. The risks at a school are different from those in a factory or a client’s home, so it’s best to tailor your assessment to each environment.
The good news? You can use a template to make the process quicker and easier.
What Should Be in a Cleaning Risk Assessment?
Here are the basics:
- Hazards you’ve identified (e.g. slips, trips and falls, electrical equipment, chemical exposure etc.)
- Who might be at risk (e.g. your staff, clients, the public)
- The risk rating (high/medium/low risk)
- The control measures you’ll put in place
- Who’s responsible and when it will be reviewed
It doesn’t need to be fancy, just clear, specific, and useful.
